Trying to join every “Familia” he could find — and being turned down by just as many, Bell was at his breaking point when found by the failed goddess Hestia. With Bell in need of a God or Goddess, and Hestia in need of “children” the meeting brought about the Hestia Familia! Being blessed with Falna by Hestia, Bell starts his new life as an Adventurer. After a near death experience with a Minotaur, and a fated meeting with a beautiful golden haired warrior — Bell’s goals change!
Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon (Danmachi) is written by Fujino Omori with illustrations by Suzuhito Yasuda. Printed in the U.S.A and translated by its US publisher Yen Press. Standing at 216 pages tall I picked up my copy from Amazon for $14. Following the Yen Press light novel M.O. — the beginning of the book comes with a beautiful full color illustration. With the book itself being printed to Yen Press standards as well.
The story takes a very common premise, and put a charming spin on it. As stated in its Afterword the author took the concept from RPG style video games. From prowling dungeons, fighting monsters for loot, and leveling up Danmachi stays true to the ways of RPG’s. With the gods from Greek mythology thrown in it makes for a very enjoyable story! Fujino Omori does an excellent job describing the world and how everything works. I really enjoyed the leveling system! Given Falna by their respective God or Goddess familia members gather excilia through life experience to level up! The gods carve the Falna directly on the back in the form of hieroglyphs. The basic abilities are Power, Endurance, Utility, Agility, and Magic. You can also develop skills!
I really enjoyed Fujino’s style of writing! On more than one occasion i found myself smiling thinking, “I see what you did there!” It was exciting and engaging I will definitely being picking up volume 2! I discovered Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon when the anime was streaming on Crunchyroll, and I enjoyed it so much I had to check out the source material!
FINAL SAY: It’s a fun light read that’s definitely worth picking up! Not to mention it goes into much greater detail than the anime!
